Canowindra - home of the fish fossils and hot air balloons
Canowindra is located at the Southern end of the Cabonne Shire, 36kms from Cowra and 60kms from Orange. Canowindra is well known for its warm climate wines with many cellar doors for the wine connoisseur to choose from.

Canowindra’s main street presents a streetscape of outstanding historical significance. The street is a very unusual shape, following the crooked route of the old bullock track and is unaffected by time complete with late nineteenth century architecture.
Canowindra is home to a world famous 360 million year old fish fossil collection. The collection is housed in the Age of Fishes Museum where visitors can view the original fossil slabs along with audio and visual displays and two permanent exhibitions. Enjoy the gift shop, picnic ground, outdoor timeline, education den and the sculpture garden. The Museum is conveniently located in Canowindra’s main street and is the accredited visitor information centre.
Canowindra is well known for its collection of galleries showing works by local painters, potters and artisans. The main street boosts several art galleries and boutique retail stores. There are also many quaint country pubs, clubs, restaurants and cafes to appease your appetite.
Accommodation options are varied carrying the charm and friendliness of the town. Options range from lavish rooms on a vineyard, luxury stone cottages with breathtaking views overlooking the magnificent Lachlan valley, boutique B&Bs, fully serviced caravan park and a well appointed motel to a heritage listed guesthouse located in Canowindra's historic main street.
Don’t be surprised to come across some real surprises that typify the regions unique characteristics whilst exploring the many vineyards located around Canowindra.
